Most vets over here don't know that, or tried once, got buried in paperwork, and gave up. It's real, it's called the **Foreign Medical Program (FMP)**, and the whole game is knowing the two rules and picking the right hospital. *Not legal or VA advice — Defiant is a concierge, not the VA. Every figure below is from public VA sources (linked at the bottom); your benefits authorization letter is the final word on what's covered. We help you navigate it; we don't decide it.* ## The two rules that trip everyone up 1. **Service-connected only.** FMP reimburses care for the conditions the VA has rated as **service-connected** — plus any condition that *aggravates* one. That knee the VA rated at 30%? Covered. The flu you caught last week? Not. This is the #1 misunderstanding, and it's the whole boundary of the program. 2. **You must be registered *before* it pays.** FMP isn't automatic with your disability rating — you enroll, and the VA sends you a **benefits authorization letter** listing exactly which conditions they'll cover abroad. So the model is: - You get treated for a **covered** condition, pay or arrange billing, and a claim goes to the VA (**VA Form 10-7959f-2**, now also fileable online). - The VA reimburses — these days by **direct deposit** — for covered services, FDA-approved medications, and durable medical equipment. - *Inference —* a hospital experienced with FMP will hand you an **itemized bill in English** with the diagnosis and codes the VA needs, keep proper records, and sometimes coordinate billing directly.
