Pharmacies in Chiang Mai: What You Can Buy, and Where, at 2 a.m.

The green cross is one of Thailand's great everyday mercies. A ร้านขายยา (ráan khǎai yaa — pharmacy) sits on nearly every commercial block, a licensed pharmacist stands behind the counter through the posted hours, and a striking amount of routine medicine is dispensed on the spot, at posted prices, in two minutes, without an appointment.

Here's how the system works, and where the counters are.

How Thai pharmacies work

Thai law sorts medicines into tiers, and the tier — not the shop — decides what you walk out with:

Two practical notes. The box here carries the generic name (the international one, not the US brand) or a Thai brand. And pharmacist hours are roughly 9:00–21:00; outside them, the 24 h counters live inside the private hospitals on the hospital guide.

What it costs

Indicative posted prices, August 2026. A blister of paracetamol is ฿10–20. Common generics — antihistamines, simple antibiotics when dispensed, stomach medicines — mostly land ฿30–200 per course. Imported brands cost import-brand money. Nothing about the counter is a negotiation; prices are marked or quoted flat, and asking the price first is ordinary Thai manners.

When the pharmacy is the wrong counter

Pharmacists here are genuinely skilled triage — and they'll say so themselves when something needs a doctor. Fevers that persist, anything cardiac, anything neurological, prescriptions that need continuity: that's clinic territory, same-day and inexpensive here. The hospital guide shows where to walk in, and for care you're planning ahead of a trip, the concierge desk gets quotes in writing first.

FAQ

Can I buy antibiotics over the counter in Thailand?

Many common ones are pharmacist-dispensed after a consult at the counter — legal here, surprising to Americans. The pharmacist can and will decline when a doctor is the right call.

Can I refill my home prescription in Thailand?

Routine medicines are often dispensable by generic name; controlled classes need a Thai doctor's prescription — a clinic visit here is fast and inexpensive.

Is there a 24-hour pharmacy in Chiang Mai?

The dependable 24 h counters are the private hospital pharmacies. Between the convenience-store shelf tier and those, the city is covered around the clock.

Are medicines in Thailand real?

At licensed green-cross pharmacies and hospital counters, yes — Thailand's FDA regulates the supply tightly.
