Choosing Senior Care in Chiang Mai: The Vetting Visit, Step by Step

The case for Chiang Mai senior care — the staffing ratios, the gardens, the monthly rates that don't devour an estate — is made on the senior living page, numbers and caveats included. This page is the next step: you're persuaded enough to look, and now somebody has to actually choose. That somebody is usually a family member with one week in Thailand and no checklist.

Here's the checklist. Good homes answer all of it gladly — that's rather the point.

The facilities, mapped

11 senior-care and geriatric facilities sit on Defiant's mapped directory around Chiang Mai:

FacilityFrom Tha Phae Gate
พีดีเนอร์สซิ่งโฮม ดูแลผู้สูงอายุ~4.1 km
ศูนย์เวชศาสตร์ผู้สูงอายุ เชียงใหม่~4.3 km
Helping Hands Nursing Home~4.6 km
Kanya Nursing Home~5.8 km
สถานสงเคราะห์คนชราวัยทองนิเวศน์~38.7 km

From Defiant's nightly OpenStreetMap refresh, 2026-10-06. Distance matters twice here — for the family visit, and for the hospital run.

The vetting visit, step by step

Announced and unannounced. The scheduled tour shows the best day; an unannounced drop-in (mid-afternoon is telling) shows the ordinary one. Facilities comfortable with both are telling you something good about themselves.

1. Staffing.

2. Ordinary time. Residents are parked in front of a TV or engaged; staff address them by name or not, in one language or another; someone kneels to wheelchair height to talk, or nobody does. Nobody can fake the texture of an ordinary afternoon.

3. Medication.

4. The hospital run. The map above gives the distance. Homes differ in which hospital they use for emergencies, who accompanies the resident, and how fast the family hears. Good homes have a recent example and tell it plainly.

5. Money.

6. The family loop. Homes differ in the rhythm of photos and video calls, and in who answers WhatsApp or LINE messages, how fast, and in English. The established homes connect prospective families with a reference family in their time zone.

7. Trial month. The good operators offer one and recommend it themselves. It answers more than every brochure combined.

Currency on this page: ฿100 ≈ $2.97 / €2.64 / £2.25 — Bank of Thailand mid rate, 2026-10-02. Live board runs on the household's own feed.

The language question, answered early

Care is bilingual work here: hands-on staff are Thai, senior staff at expat-serving homes work in English (several are European-run), and the charts can be kept in both. A parent who still charms in English will be answered in kind; a parent slipping into an older tongue will be met with more patience here than most systems anywhere can offer. The translator bench covers the paperwork moments.

FAQ

How do I choose a nursing home in Chiang Mai from abroad?

The usual loop: a shortlist from the mapped facilities, video tours, then one in-person vetting trip with the checklist above — announced visit, unannounced visit, hospital run, trial month. It fits in a week.

What questions should I ask a Thai senior-care facility?

Night staffing, nurse coverage, medication charting, the emergency-hospital story, all-in versus à-la-carte pricing, and the family-communication rhythm — the seven steps above, in writing where it matters.

Can families do a trial stay before committing?

The established homes offer a trial month and encourage it.

Who handles medical care for residents?

The home manages daily care and medication routines; doctors come on rounds or residents travel to their hospital; homes differ in which hospital, how far, and who escorts. The map above shows the distances.

Want the shortlist built before the family flies? The concierge desk pre-vets facilities against this exact checklist and books the visits — so the week on the ground is spent choosing, not searching. Questions cost nothing:
